The Moments That Last Long After the Fireworks

The Fourth of July has a way of bringing people together. For some, it’s a backyard barbeque. For others, it’s a parade, a neighborhood get-together, or simply sitting outside with family as the sun goes down. No matter what your tradition looks like – or even if you don’t have one – there's something special about taking a break from the everyday and spending time with the people who matter most.

One of my favorite Fourth of July memories comes from my time at the Reading Symphony Orchestra, where we paired live music with fireworks. There was something magical about watching the sky light up while the orchestra played, surrounded by friends, family and the community. Those evenings were a reminder that some of our best memories aren’t just about the event itself, but about who we’re sharing it with. I also look back fondly on summers spent with my family gathered around the grill while my dad perfected another recipe on the smoker. Those barbecues weren’t fancy, but they were filled with laughter, conversation and the simple joy of being together as a family.

Josh’s Fourth of July memories are a little different. Growing up, his family often worked on the holiday, so they didn’t always have the traditional celebration. But there was one tradition they never missed: watching the fireworks together. They would head to the Harrisburg Country Club, where they could see fireworks lighting up the sky all along Front Street. Looking back, he says it wasn’t really about having the best view – it was about sharing that time together as a family, no matter how busy the day had been.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, I hope you find time to slow down, enjoy whatever traditions are meaningful to you, and create a few new memories along the way. Whether you are hosting a cookout, traveling, watching fireworks, or simply relaxing with loved ones, those moments together are what last long after the holiday is over. Wishing everyone a happy, safe and memorable Fourth of July!
