Career advice for early career financial planners.
The average age of a CFP® professional is right around 50 which means that many advisors are closer to retirement than the beginning of their careers1. And yet, in my opinion, industry is not doing a great job providing opportunities for the next generation of planners to be client-ready (only 30% of CFP® professionals are under the age of 40). That creates a real challenge, not just for firms, but for clients who will need thoughtful guidance for decades to come.
Adam and I are in a bit of a unique spot, when it comes to this. We both have nearly 20 years of experience working with clients, building plans, and growing relationships. At the same time, we still have a long runway ahead of us, both in our careers and in how we think about the future of this firm. And because of that, we feel a responsibility to help others find their way into this profession and develop the right way once they’re here.
