Soup Season
With the cool morning air we’ve had, it feels as though fall has officially arrived, bringing with it cozy sweaters, crunchy leaves underfoot, and my absolute favorite culinary tradition: soup season. There is something deeply comforting about a steaming bowl of homemade soup on a chilly evening. It is more than just dinner. It’s a balm after a long day and the ultimate comfort food for cool autumn nights.
In the Gibson home, the arrival of fall also reignites a (mostly) friendly debate in the kitchen. My husband, Josh, is a culinary free-spirit. He is the king of opening the fridge, grabbing whatever odds and ends we have on hand, and quite miraculously turning them into a delicious, one-of-a-kind soup creation. With his mom being an amazing chef, he has certainly picked up her talent in the kitchen. He never uses a measuring spoon, rarely writes anything down (to my deep disappointment after a particularly good creation), and somehow makes magic happen every single time.
I, on the other hand, take a much more methodical approach. I love finding a well-reviewed recipe, following the exact measurements the first time through, and only tweaking the seasonings or ingredients once I feel comfortable. While Josh relies on pure intuition, I find satisfaction in the process of learning the rules before gently breaking them.
Despite our vastly different cooking styles, the end result is always the same: a warm kitchen filled with incredible aromas and a delicious meal shared together. Whether you are an adventurous home chef like Josh who cooks by heart, or a precise planner like me who sticks to the recipe, fall is the perfect time to slow down and experiment in the kitchen. So, break out your favorite dutch oven, grab some seasonal vegetables, and embrace the magic of soup season this fall.
