Make Room for the "New"

I’m a New Year’s baby, so I’ve always looked forward to the holiday. More than just a new calendar year, it marks another year of my life come and gone. Perhaps because of that, I’ve also taken the old “making resolutions” tradition very seriously. I enjoy the opportunity to think about what the New Year might bring, what fresh start I can make, what personal goals I can focus on. I want to be better, as a father, a husband, a friend and an advisor. But to be better, and really work towards those goals, I have think about what needs to come into my life, and what needs to go out.

I think making space for new things is often lost in the process. Sure, we all want to add good things to life. So we resolve to play more, earn more, read more, exercise more or eat better. But if we are being honest with ourselves, there are probably two main “reasons” we fail to do these things in the first place; lack of adequate time management, and lack of motivation. We fill our lives with so much stuff, that having time for the things we want (maybe even need?) just isn’t there.

So that’s my hope for you this holiday season. That you’ll not only begin thinking about the good things you want to bring into your life, but that you’ll also consider letting go of something bad to make some room in your life for the good. Identify the time killers, the pressure points, the things that bring you down, and find a way to start letting them go. I hope pairing the two will be motivating to you, as you work towards a better 2017.

Oh, and write your goals down. You’re much more likely to stick to them when you’ve committed them to writing and review. And if one of your resolutions happens to be financial, consider giving us a call. It’s all part of our promise to help align your values, vision and wealth through personal planning.

Happy Holidays and here’s to a great 2017!
